Good Wood Derby Rules

Keep your wood in line!

All cars must pass the following inspection to qualify for the race:

1. Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches and the car must have 1 3⁄4” clearance between the
wheels.
2. Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
3. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
4. The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
5. The Minimum Front Nose Width shall be at least 0.5” in the center and parallel with the front
axle to operate properly on the track.
6. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
7. No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite.
8. The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
9. The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
10. No loose materials of any kind are allowed on the car.
11. Additional wheels can be purchased separately.
12. The official race scale that is used at car check-in shall be considered final.
13. The official pine wood block must be used. The block may be shaped in any way
that is desired.
14. Official BSA wheels must be used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or
rounded. You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.
15. The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.
16. Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit.

Additional Rules:

1. All 4 wheels must be touching the track. No axle bending.

2. The wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheel) cannot be moved from the original pinewood block position

Race Day Rules

  • Each car must pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make adjustment.

  • Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.

  • If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make repairs.

  • Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.

  • The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these rules.
